Everything you should know to understand how to write a bio
Whether it's for a team directory, a professional website, or a social media profile, a well-written bio can perfectly encapsulate your professional skills, development, and success. As a result, it has the potential to make a positive impression on important contacts, clients, or even potential employers. Keep reading to discover what a professional bio is and why it's important, what you should include in one, how to write a bio, and a few effectively written examples. What to include in a bio
When writing a bio, you should include a few key details, like your:
- Areas of expertise.
- Skills.
- Hobbies.
- Professional and personal goals.
- Mission statement.
- Alma mater.
- Hometown.
- Current job title.
- Contact information.
Though these can be a great starting place, you don’t have to include every one of these details in your professional bio. Bios are meant to be brief, so decide for yourself which details are the most important to you and your story.
How to write a bio
Here are the steps you can take to write an effective professional bio:
1. Decide on a perspective
Though you can certainly write in the first-person point of view, it’s generally viewed as more professional to use a third-person perspective. Not only does this make it a bit easier to write about yourself, but it also gives you the opportunity to include your first and last name in a natural way. Additionally, it can make your professional biography better-suited for search engine optimization because it provides specific details. Just make sure that you avoid using your name too frequently.
2. Include an introduction
You should start your professional bio with a brief introduction that includes important details, like your:
- Name.
- Position.
- Education.
- Certifications.
- Achievements.
3. Provide supporting information
Once you’ve developed a strong introductory sentence, you should mention your values and passions. It can be helpful to evaluate your:
- Personal values: These are the values that have shaped you into who you are and sparked your interest in your profession.
- Professional values: Professional values can include the aspects of your company that you find most important as well as your professional goals.
- Attributes: These are the characteristics that allow you to excel in your line of work.
- Skills: Whether it’s through training, education, or experience, there are certain skills that you have mastered that make you an asset.
You can also include information related to your current position, such as your responsibilities. These details can make it easier for prospective employers to identify you as an ideal candidate when they’re searching on professional platforms.
4. Keep it brief
The ideal length of your bio is largely dependent on its purpose and the platform it will be used on. For example, social media platforms typically limit the word count for bios. When writing a professional bio for a job search site or resume, you should try to keep it between 300 and 500 words. A bio for a professional website, on the other hand, could be between 1,500 and 2,000 words. Regardless, it is usually best to keep your bio as clear and concise as possible.
To help you make sure that you only include the most relevant details, it can be helpful to organize your bio so that the most important details are addressed first. Additionally, you should cut out any information that doesn’t benefit the purpose of your bio.
5. Proofread your work
Your professional bio is a refection of your communication skills and attention to detail, so it’s vital that you edit your work thoroughly. Check for spelling and grammatical errors or any unnatural phrasing. To do this, it can be helpful to read it out loud or ask a friend or family member to check it for you.

You can use this template to help guide you as you write your own professional bio:

Here are just a few examples of well-written professional bios:
Example 1

Reggie currently works for Shook Once, where he harnesses his intimate knowledge of the industry to further the reach of liquor brands in the greater Chicago area. When he’s not using his attention to detail and positive energy to educate others about the brands he works with, you’ll find Reggie at home with his furry best friend, Ronin.
Example 2

Over the years, Olive has been recognized for her work on a number of big campaigns, both as a copywriter and a creative director.
